British Aerospace challenges the ATC to raise over £100,00 and then they would match it. 58 set about fulfilling our contribution.

January - Sgt. LOUISE BUXTON selected to play net-ball for the Air Training Corps at RAF Cosford, in February 00 - the ATC team win !

Cadets KERNOHAN and GREYSON selected to the Wing Junior Rugby Squad.

CO approves the formation of this years Drill and Field Squads in preparation for the Wing Training day on April 16.

Central & East Yorkshire Wing has a new Wing Commander appointed for the new millennium Wing Commander KEN DAVIES QGM ' Takes the controls ' as Angela Cartwright steps down after seven years to take Hornsea Squadron Commander.

Friday 21st Armed Forces Careers Office presentation on the RAF opportunities for school leavers.

Ten cadets of the 'Field Squad' attend the Driffield Camp as part of the D of E and Adult Basic Expedition leaders Award training (BELA) Led by CI Alan Beattie the weekend was a success on the 29/30 dispute the high winds and showers.

More flying 11 AEF - 5 cadets and Mr. Danny Askew's final flight before he is excepted by the RAF as an Engineering Officer candidate, commencing in April .

Thursday 3rd February - Three senior female cadets visit RAF Linton on Ouse for a career selection presentation. Flt Sgt. LEE S, Sgt. BUXTON L and Sgt. LEE R.

12 February. Flying 11 AEF - four cadets.

4 March, Cdt STEPHEN YEWDALL commences his Gliding Scholarship at 642 VGS.

6 March Squadron exams - 11/12 Initial Cadet training Weekend - 5 probationers.

25/26 Adventure Training weekend at two venues - BELA 12 Cadets and two staff go over to Scarborough for the D of E expedition training. 7 cadets and 4 staff complete the Initial Navigation Training at Walden Bunk Barn. This involves 3 minibuses from RAF and Army sources and a total of 25 personnel at nil cost to the Squadron. Good effort everyone !

15 April, three Gliding Induction Courses at 642 VGS RAF Linton on Ouse. 16 April Wing Training day at RAF Linton on Ouse - 58 take part in the Drill, volleyball, five a-side, first-aid and aircraft recce competitions.

26 April. Public relations RAFA MILLENNIUM LINK - Four cadets help publicize the 'Link' a-top of an open top bus around the Harrogate town centre. Led by Sqn Ldr Derek Walker ( Wing Chairman and Harrogate RAFA Secretary ) Sgt. REBECA LEE and cadets JAMIE BEATTIE, CARINA TAIT, SIMON MEESAM had an adventurous time avoiding (most of the time) low tree branches and swooping birds.

1 May - Bilton Gala fund raising and public awareness event.

5 May - Athletics selection training at RAF Menwith Hill.

May 8 - Flt Sgt. LEE is not accepted for RAF Aircrew due to slight short-sight vision though still fit for Flying Scholarship and Ground Commissions.

May 12 - After her disappointment comes elation - Flt Sgt. SUZANNE LEE is awarded the first ever RAFA Flying Scholarship. With slightly more hours than the present RAF equivalent, she has beaten eight others on the short-list, from an original list of hundreds. We are all tremendously proud of her achievement ! Press releases result later in RAF News, RAFA magazine and Air Cadet News coverage.

May 14 - Eleven 58 cadets take eight medals at the Wing Athletics held at York's Ryedale Stadium an a warm sunny day.

17 May - 3 cadets and Fg Off Towse fly at RAF Leeming (11 AEF).

26 May - 30 cadets and six staff visit RAF Menwith Hill to use the four lanes of the newly refurbished bowling alley. Many thanks to Mr. Thompson of the civilian committee for the arrangements.

31 May Flying 3 cadets and CI Alan Beattie with 11 AEF.

4 June Ten cadets from 59 help a local girl to raise money for the Anthony Nolan Bone Marrow Trust by pulling an RAF Tornado F3 along the taxiway at RAF Leeming. Organised by the Senior Flt Sgt. NEIL BLACKBURN.

Also that day Flt Sgt. LEE and Cdt. WATERMAN represent Central and East Yorkshire Wing in Athletics. Both gain medals and selection to the North Region Team.

9 June - Project Milli-Comm in conjunction with Darley Moor Amateur Radio Society. Four cadets commence a rolling programme with CI Greatorex to contact participating ATC and other stations world wide on the HF Radio network.

11 June - Yet more flying Flt Sgt. BLACKBURN takes three cadets to No. 11 AEF at RAF Leeming - this is followed up with a press release and photograph in the Harrogate Herald the following Wednesday.

Thursday 22 - two more flying slots at RAF Leeming.

Saturday 24 June 13 cadets and staff take part on a Pulse Ranger outdoor tactics game at North Kirklington.

Sunday the 25 June RAF Waddington Airshow - Squadron run a full minibus to this premier North England air display. Also that weekend two cadets represent North Region in Athletics at RAF Cosford. Flt Sgt. LEE gains two bronze medals and Cdt. WATERMAN is fourth in his event.

Monday 26 June AFI rehearsal parade 39 cadets and probationers - the AFI is cancelled.

July summer camp is held at RAF Sealand + Air Cadet 2000 (AC2K) RAF CRANWELL seven cadets to Sealand and five to AC2K.

August is very busy Hag Dyke survival course - cadets CURLIS and WARMSLEY.

ATC MILLENNIUM FLIGHT around the UK - 58 Squadron dispatch mid-week, a keen and newly enrolled cadet ATKINS and staff cadet Cpl. LONGSTAFFE to assist our North Region's reception of the Vigilant Motor Gliders to RAF Linton on Ouse.

The Junior navigation weekend is also held at Walden Bunk Barn on the 5/6. Then the following weekend 11/13 a Senior Leadership course is run by Junior Technician Hart of RAF Leeming, held also at the barn - this course pushes the NCO's and senior cadets.

Gliding Scholarship Awarded to Cpl. SCHOFIELD + 3 gliding induction courses.

Flt Lt Glenn Quayle RAF Regiment marries at Aldwalk Manor to Miss Julie Holmes. Glenn was once a Staff cadet SNCO with 58, we wonder if Miss Holmes is any relation to our first ATC Commanding Officer.

Fg Off Jack Towse is OIC for six weeks while the CO fly's off to Australia for the MILLENNIUM OLYMPIC GAMES of the 27th Olympiad held in Sydney.

Before he leaves the CO ensures a new Cadet Warrant Officer is appointed with 58, CWO NEIL BLACKBURN. Neil is the CO's first CWO to be appointed by Wing.

Sgt. LOUISE BUXTON completes her Gliding Scholarship at the end of August just before heading north to Durham University. Officer Cadet Buxton hopes to join the RAF as a Physical Education Officer.

September - Stonefall & Battle of Britain parades letter of appreciation from Mayor.

Flt Sgt. SUZANNE LEE and Cdt McLAUGHLIN selected to Wing swimming team. The Flt Sgt. is also in wing net-ball squad.

Sgt. REBECA LEE gains an RAF Flying Scholarship to commence 2001. Flt Sgt. SUZANNE LEE is continuing her RAFA flying training.

More Flying and Gliding in October 3 cadets to 11 AEF and 5 gliding slots filled.

29 October Wing Cross country - fourteen cadets participate though we lose the Senior Girls trophy, held for two consecutive years. Flt Sgt. LEE takes the Gold Medal and 58 are 'runners up' Youths event. 3 cadets from our Squadron are selected for the Wing team - Flt Sgt. LEE, Cpl. YEWDALL, Cdt McLAUGHLIN.

5/6 November Initial Cadet Course - 3 probationers.

12th Remembrance Sunday Parade at the cenotaph in Harrogate. Thirty one cadets with the Cadet Warrant Officer plus the three squadron officers, make this the highest cadet turnout in recent history for the first Remembrance of the new millennium. The ATC is seen as the largest youth organization in the town.

Two recruits the following Monday. Squadron exams held - Leading and Senior cadets.

CWO BLACKBURN and Cdt SCOTT are selected for the Wing Senior Soccer Squad.

Friday 17 November - Squadron visits RAF Menwith Hill for Bowling - 6 lanes booked for the evening. A great success thanks to Mr. Graham Elmore of 1953 and our own Mr. Alan Beattie.

Monday 20 November - Project Milli-comm ceases, after six months 16 cadets have experienced the world of Amateur Radio at the Darley ARC located on RAF Menwith. This millennium project has helped forge links to the ARC and allowed cadets access to equipment not available to 58. This is the SIXTH Millennium Event that 58 Squadron have successfully participated in during 2000.

Annual Formal Inspection Friday 24 November by Wing Commander Ken Davies QGM 41 cadets are on duty that evening 34 enrolled on parade, 5 probationers and 2 senior cadets at Amport House. This is the highest turnout at 58 since the early 1990's. Flt Lt Walker is pleased and slightly jubilant about the significance !

58 (Harrogate) Squadron Air Training Corps is judged to be the most efficient unit of Central and East Yorkshire Wing after the Annual Formal Inspections for 2000. In the millennium year 58 will be nominated for the Sir Alan Lees Trophy in 2001 by winning the Wing Efficiency Shield.

JANUARY 2001 - Cadet Warrant Officer SUZANNE LEE is appointed, 58 now have a second CWO and is only the second female to attain the rank since the introduction of girls to the ATC in 1983.

Sgt. Mark Longstaffe is rewarded from his visit to OASC RAF Cranwell with a Flying Scholarship to be flown by the end of 2002. This brings the total to four at 58 Squadron of sponsored flying training. Each scholarship is worth around £7000.

Cpl. STEPHEN YEWDALL is selected to attend the Nordic Skiing course held in Zweisal in Barvaria.

Cadets and probationer strength of over forty parade regularly.

Flying Officer Jack Towse is posted to 886 (City of Ripon) Squadron.

5th February 2001 is the 60th Anniversary of the ATC

The Sunday prior to the anniversary, the 4 Feb 01, thirty one uniformed cadets of 58 Squadron and both Officers Flt Lt David Walker and Plt Officer Philip Hawley parade at York Minister to celebrate our Diamond Jubilee.

58 Squadron parade the only ADCC banner remaining in our wing, alongside 58 ATC banner and all the other Squadrons of our wing. Six cadets are the Honour Guard for VIPs as well as VIP collectors during the service. Plt Off Hawley takes part in a short ATC presentation 'This is the ATC'. The highlights are Canon Jack Armstrong recalling life as an ADCC cadet and a recount of the posthumous VC awarded to a former cadet, Arthur Aaron during WWII. For the cadets the 'Three Cheers' from 600 cadets and staff in York Minster brought smiles to everyone's faces including the Dean.

CWO SUZANNE LEE is Central & East Yorkshire Wing's nomination for the Dacre Brooch in 2001. This is announced while she is participating in the National ATC Band at RAF Cranwell. She is awarded the Margaret Bickerdike Memorial Trophy.

19th February Adult Warrant Officer Tony Tune is appointed to 58 Squadron after receiving his Royal Warrant. He will be the first to fill the appointment since 1997.

Squadron Awards Night 23rd February 2001 - Air Commodore Adrian Impey is guest of honour, President of the RAFA in Harrogate.

24th February - FLYING 11 AEF new Grob Tutors our first official allocation for 3 cdts.
