About the Badger Group

The Harrogate and District Badger Group was set up with the following aims:

  • To protect badgers from persecution
  • To help people who are having problems with badgers
  • To educate people about badgers
  • To support the welfare of badgers

With these in mind, we are involved in:

  • Sett monitoring - recording badger activity at setts
  • Sett protection - strengthening setts to make it harder for badger diggers to have access
  • Recording of badger road casualties
  • Carrying out surveys of land where badgers may be affected by development
  • Advising land owners or members of the public how to deal with problems with badgers in a humane and legal fashion
  • School talks, and talks to adults
  • Treatment of injured badgers, and their release where and when appropriate

We produce a quarterly newsletter called Badger Times.

We hold quarterly members' meetings to discuss current issues. We usually have a guest speaker after the business part of the meeting to give a talk.

We treat injured badgers, where appropriate in our holding pens.

We attend local agricultural shows - to educate the public and raise funds.

We are members of the National Federation of Badger Groups (NFBG). This is an umbrella organisation which represents all the local badger groups. It gives a national voice to what would otherwise be small groups with little national influence.
