Watchet Town Band

The band was originally formed as a military style organisation linked to local militia, taking on the name of Watchet Town Band in about 1893 then with the gradual decrease in woodwind instruments the band evolved into the standard instrumentation of the brass band of today.

The band has been continuously involved in providing music, from its extensive library, for the local community events, both religious and secular together with concerts on its own behalf which help with the finance required to keep the band in a viable condition.

The leadership of the band had been in the capable hands of Alfred Wedlake for about the first fifty years, followed by Tom Bulpin, who was succeeded by Fred Bishop who was conductor for over forty years during which time he had taken the band contesting and had twice won the area finals leading to the national finals in London. The present conductor is Geoffrey Perkins.

Players in the band have mainly been taught by other band members, this being the method employed to try to keep the band members at a level sufficiently high so as to be able to carry out the engagements.

Tuition is offered, together with an appropriate instrument, to anyone who may have an interest in learning to play with the view of helping the band continue it's very long history.

The band has an ongoing recruitment drive, both for learners and brass musicians alike.
