Hotel Du Vin – Restaurant Review

There are some wonderful places to eat, drink and stay in Harrogate, but few that do all three exceptionally well. Hotel Du Vin is the holy grail, stunning food, exceptional wine lists and bedrooms that were made for lazy weekends and long lie-ins.

From the moment I stepped through the grand front door and onto the polished wooden floors, laid with beautiful rugs and providing foundations for the deep all encompassing suede sofas, I knew I had found my new favourite place. Situated in the heart of Harrogate, minutes walk from the station and discreetly set back from the stunning acres of The Stray, everything about the welcome you get from Hotel Du Vin subtly screams come on in and stay for a while.

The bar is stocked to the brim with stunning wines from all around the world, and manned by highly trained and incredibly knowledgable staff members ready to suggest the very best beverage.  I was welcomed with a large vodka and tonic and a peruse of the extensive bistro menu. Filled with rich and decadent main courses including sensational steaks, the finest fish dishes and starters that left my mouth watering.

The bistro offers not only a wonderful selection of food and drink, but also a elegant comfort that is felt throughout the establishment, beautiful leather seat, dense wooden tables and wall to wall art.

Despite struggling to settle on just one starter, due to the vast choice, I began my meal with a tuna and avocado tartare, presented beautifully on a stark white plate and accompanied by a fresh crisp Chardonnay.  This was followed by the most stunning steak, cooked to perfection and twinned with chips and a robust glass of Merlot that added to the flavour of the steak.

Although I am a wine fan and think of myself as quite knowledgable, I cannot praise the sommelier highly enough, his vast insight and advice made the meal just that little bit more special by ensuring that I was matching the best wines possible with my courses to entirely enhance the experience.

To finish I indulged in a french apple tart, with fresh vanilla ice cream and a glass of sweet ice cold dessert wine. Without doubt the greatest way to end the meal.  With no where important to be after dinner I spent a delightful hour sat on the large inviting sofas tucked away, drinking beautiful coffee and chatting with friends. The perfect end to a wonderful evening.

I cannot recommend Hotel Du Vin highly enough, the staff made the whole experience even more wonderful and I must thank Grant and his team for looking after me so well.
