Bar Chapel Methodist Church

Bar Chapel, built near the old Toll Bar on Skipton Road in Harrogate, has been serving the area since 1863. Their welcome reads: "There's always room for you".

Mission and Objectives
Bar Chapel aims to be a "compassionate, caring community for Christ's sake". Through worship, fellowship, ministry and mission, Bar strives to:
* Offer a diversity of God-centred, meaningful worship in order that the truths of God's word may be learned and experienced;
* Develop closer relationships with God and the with others by meeting together in prayer, Bible study and various forms of fellowship;
* Pray and serve in the power of the Holy Spirit in order that needs may be met and faith may grow, and
* Promote among those in our community the love, salvation and unity of the Lord Jesus Christ.

Disabled Facilities include new toilets and an induction loop in the school room.

Fellowship Groups meet at various times - advised through the weekly notice sheet at Sunday services.

Walking Group goes for a walk of 6 - 8 miles on the second Saturday of each month. All welcome; meet at the car park at Bar to leave at 9:30am.

Chapel History
Bar Chapel began about 1863 when the seeds were first sown at meetings of local people in a cottage in the village of Bilton. Under the ministry of Rev Thomas Vasey attendances grew. From the humble beginnings the first chapel was built at a cost of £286 14s 4d, and opened on 19 September 1865.
A further upturn in the strength of the Methodist society at Bar made it necessary once more to provide larger premises. On 8 May 1889 the stone-laying ceremony took place for the present building and this was opened just five months later on 5 September.
Various additions have been made since then, principally to the ancillary rooms. It was through the efforts of the choir that the present organ was obtained in 1924. Over the years the chapel has prospered - one of the most important areas being in the Sunday School and Youth work.
