Berwick Grange is Harrogate's local Methodist Home for the Aged. Situated since 1946 at 5 Otley Road, Harrogate, Berwick Grange was converted from a private family home; 60 years later Berwick Grange was a residential care home to 32 residents until the move to 14 Wetherby Road, Harrogate, HG2 7FA (Map).

The new Berwick Grange home, designed from scratch to meet the needs of its 50 plus residents, was opened to residents by Christmas 2006, with a formal opening in May 2007.

All meals are served in the dining rooms situated on each floor. Morning coffee and afternoon tea with biscuits are served in the lounges; meals can also be delivered to resident's rooms when they are unable to make the dining rooms.

Weekly services: Berwick Grange, whilst enjoying its Methodist roots, provides care to everyone regardless of their personal beliefs. Many of the residents have a faith and MHS believes that the residents should have the opportunity to express their faith and enjoy corporate worship. Every Wednesday there is a resident's service at 11:00am. The local chaplain to Berwick Grange is Rev Colin Emerson. The staff are always delighted to arrange for residents to attend their own worship centre or organise a minister to visit the home.

Over three floors with lounges, dining areas and facilities including a hair salon, this is residential care that shows how we value our older generations. The new building has been designed to provide three levels of care:
Ground floor: general nursing and residential care
First floor: EMI care for those in the early stages of dementia
Second floor: with a higher level of intensive care for those with dementia, understanding the meanings behind individual frustrations and behaviours.

Methodist Homes
are building a new care home in Harrogate which will offer dementia care in addition to residential and nursing care support. This is because our research has identified a shortfall in care provision for local people living with dementia.
The new care home will allow us to expand much needed services within a new purpose built environment.
The new home's design incorporates many innovative features, and is based on our research and experience of what older people want, both now and in the future.

plans are to build supported retirement apartments on the site of the old home at 5 Otley Road, Harrogate (Map). These will be available for sale to older people who need a care package, as an alternative option to living in a care home. This is a unique aspect of the support being developed by MHA and allows people to stay in their own homes as owner occupiers.
Les Sudron with the plans for the redevelopment of Otley RoadBoth the new care home and the supported retirement housing will be very much a part of the local community, through links that already exist with volunteers, churches and community groups. Such links enable the residents to feel that they are an important part of the community and help them to maintain an interest in community life.

Funding the development
Construction started at the site on Wetherby Road in 2005, and completion is scheduled for January 2007
In order to offer an enhanced quality of life, The MHA hopes to provide a library, a computer room, an activities room and a sensory garden. However, these extra features come at a price. Methodist Homes are seeking local support to help achieve the aim of offering additional facilities to improve residents' lives and have therefore launched a major fundraising appeal in Harrogate to raise £150,000.
