Churches
Together in Harrogate
is the interdenominational grouping of the Christian Churches in the town
and neighbouring villages.
United in pilgrimage, we aim to highlight our unity in Christ, so that
our differences are diminished or utilised beneficially in worship, witness
and work together, serving our community in love, so that others may be
convinced of the good news we share.
Churches
Together is sub-divided into Areas of
small interdenominational groups of churches. Each Local
Area Group has regular meetings of their own, with regular linked
church services. The six Areas unite the churches in:
Bilton
Lower Dale churches
Pannal and Beckwithshaw
Leeds Road
Starbeck and Woodlands
Town Centre
All churches come together for the Annual Assembly (2002) (2003) (2004) (2005) (2006) and
the AGM (20 May 2003) (11
May 2004) (11 May 2005) (17 May 2006) (16 May 2007).
In recent years, the Steering
Council met in September and February, with three representatives
from each area. The meetings gave opportunity for the exchange
of news and organise the communal events - like the Good Friday service,
or Lent Lunches; this has since been superceded with the new Executive group and the place of the Churches Together website as an up-to-date information exchange.
Executive Committee
Churches Together Exec functions
The Exec acts as a channel of communication between the Local Area Groups and Churches Together on a county and national level. It initiates and co-ordinates those activities that relate to the whole town. It is the forum for shared news from the Local Area Groups and individual churches.
The Exec are responsible for the CTH website and oversees town-wide matters relevant to Churches Together. The Exec have arranged insurance to cover Ecumenical events such as carol singing and the Good Friday open air service at the Cenotaph, as noted below:
'Methodist Insurance is pleased to add Churches Together in Harrogate to its client list; the policy provides £5m liability cover for ecumenically organised events across the Area Groups within Churches Together in Harrogate. If you swould like further guidance about insuring a Churches Together event the please contact Joanne Widdall on 0161 833 7767.'
Steering Council
Purpose:
the steering council had an extra co-ordinating role
as the Working Group of the overall body of Churches Together in Harrogate.
Historically it has been perceived as the decision making group.
The Steering Council
included members of the Executive Committee, Representatives from the
Associated groups (Bible Society, Christian Aid, Christian Ecology and
Youth for Christ) and up to three members from each
Local Area Group.
The Executive Committee
was sometimes described as the "Standing Committee" to the Steering
Council. The Steering Council was replaced with a revised Exec group following the 2006 AGM.
