11, 12 & 13 July: Yorkshire Churches on Show
In the Church Pavilion at the Great Yorkshire Showground. The theme in 2006 is 'The Journey – moments that touch our lives'.
Yellow footprints draw the visitors from the welcome 'Journey' to a font and displays illustrating what it means to 'belong' - in a family, fellowship.
Visitors are invited to write prayer requests on squares of paper - then folded up at the corners and placed on the water tray. A gentle, serene moment for any show goer; the prayer request are included in the midday and 4pm times of prayer in the Pavilion.
The second stage on the journey is entitled 'commitment' with photographs of wedding bliss and more. Passing Ripon Cathedral's bookstall the visitor arrives at the third station:
'Hope' includes images of suffering and death, and offers time to consider what it means to be able to trust in God for even the difficult things in life.
The many visitors to the Pavilion in 2006 - numbering over 800 each day - included Prince Charles and Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, John Sentamu, Archbishop of York, John Packer, Anglican bishop of Ripon & Leeds, Michael Townsend, chair of the Leeds Methodist District, Stephen Platten, the bishop of Wakefield, and James Bell, bishop of Knaresborough.
This year sees the launch of the Friends of the Yorkshire Church on Show and the campaign to support local farming - with corresponding impacts on global Fair Trade initiatives - on the Tuesday of the GYS; [Adobe] background paper 'Fair and Free' available on this website.
2006 sees changes in the committee organising the Church Pavilion displays, chaired by Julian Cummins, with a 2006 website: Yorkshire Churches on Show. A Press release is downloadable from this website.
