On Friday 9 May, 7:15pm at St Robert's Centre, Tower Street, Harrogate Map: 'Cancel the Debt s'il vous plait' buffet supper with a French flavour, followed by guest speaker Kwesi Owusu, Ghanaian and co-leader of the global justice organisation Southern Links. Kwesi was responsible for the Jubilee 2000 campaign in Africa.

Why S'il vous plait? The impetus for this special evening came from the G8 meeting in Evian, France, in June: and the current Jubilee Debt Campaign focus is on this forthcoming 'French Connection' and our chance to press the case for full debt cancellation with the world leaders meeting there. Advance tickets were £4.50 including a glass of wine or juice. Further details from Colin Pepper (01423 569282) or Beryl Tierney (01423 508460).

30 May - 1 June, 3pm: Christian Ecology Link Spring Weekend
Celebrate God's creation! June 1st is Conservation Sunday and June 5th is World Environment Day. To mark these events Christian Ecology Link, which since 1981 has been leading the debate on Christian responses to environmental concerns, is holding a Spring Houseparty in the Yorkshire Dales

The aim of the weekend is to celebrate God's Creation in Spring through informal discussions, music, walks in the local area, sharing environmentally friendly food, and participating in worship at a local church. There will also be presentations on the work of Christian Ecology Link aimed at supporting the work of individuals in spreading the green message in their own parishes and communities. The weekend is open to everyone, members and non-members alike, for all the time, or for just one day or session. All activities will be optional.

The venue - Ragged Hall, Rathmell, near Settle, North Yorkshire (but on the border with Lancashire) - is served by two railway stations (Giggleswick and Settle), both four miles away. Lifts can be arranged from either of the stations. Extra activities are being offered for people who would like to come a day early: a) a visit with an expert botanist to see some of the special limestone flora of the area, or b) the chance to visit Gaping Gill cave while the Bradford Potholing Club Winch is set up.

For leaflets about the Houseparty and/or details about Christian Ecology Link contact Laura Deacon, Information Officer, 3 Bond Street, Lancaster, LA1 3ER, telephone 01524 33858.

Knaresborough, Starbeck and Harrogate Prayer Initiative
Organised locally by Caroline Hurren (St Mary's church), Wynn James (Knaresborough Community Church), Tina Milne (St Andrew's), John Waterman ('Plantation') and Lyn Whitehead (also KCC).

The local Prayer initiative (across Knaresborough, Starbeck and Harrogate) was one of four hundred known prayer initiatives across the country. It was linked into a regional group based on the M62 corridor, the next gathering of which would be on Tuesday 18 March at Ossett. Part of the original vision had been to soak the area in prayer as a preparation for evangelism.

May Prayer Week: Day of Prayer from 10.00 am to 9.00 pm on Friday 16 May, and 10.00 am to 12.00 noon on Saturday 17, in St Andrew's, Starbeck. Map

Saturday 10 May, Gilbert and Sullivan evening
A lighter event: selections from many of the shows including HMS Pinafore and The Mikado, with soloists and chorus made up of members of various churches in Harrogate: Saturday 10 May, 7:30pm at Christ Church parish centre. Tickets, including wine and nibbles went for just £5 on the door.
It turned out to be a splendiferous evening, with superb characterisations, perfect scenery and even the latest props kept the audience rolling in the aisles.
