![]() Harrogate YOC was set up in September 1996 by my Husband Kevin and I and a friend, Judith Schallmo. We have recently been joined by Andrew Nethercoat, a teacher at a boroghbridge school, who is proving a great asset with the children. We have 2 meetings a month, one indoors and one outdoors (except in December, January, and February when the weather is too unpredictable for outdoor meetings - our children don't like getting cold and wet!) On average we get a dozen children at our meetings, occasionally 18 20 depending on the weather and what we are doing. Their ages range from 4 -12 years at times it can be a challenge to amuse such a wide range at times There shortly to be a new group set up for the under 8's to be called the little owls I think this will be very beneficial and intend to hold special meetings for our children of this age range. |
At the indoor meetings which are held at calcutt
village hall in knaresbourogh we have crafts and games and the occasional video,
on a range of different topics. we tend to deal mainly with birds as we do not
want to duplicate what the harrogate naturalists do its our aim to teach the
children about wildlife and conservations a fun way by playing games and talking
to them they learn a lot with out thinking about it. On our outdoor meetings we meet children and their parents at various places in the local area and bird/ animal watch . We also play games if there isn't much about . We hope to organise some trips to reserves slightly further a field soon but so far have been trying to get the group established i also feel that it is quite important to concentrate on your own patch As well as teaching the children about the environment we like to get involved in conservation projects in the area this year we are going to get involved in the conservation projects in the area This year we are going to be making some one a pond the children get involved in this from the start to finish and then return to see what creatures are using the new habitat we also have other plans in the pipeline. The groups leaders man stalls at some of the local country fairs We try to raise the profile of the YOC and also some funds for the group Last year we sold plants which we acquired by splitting ones in our gardens We also sold home made craft produce This year it is hoped that we can get the children more involved in rasing funds by holding sponsored events and even making things that we can sell : nest boxes Bird table ETC. Well that's a short introduction to the Harrogate YOC. If any of you have children and would like to bring them to any of our meetings you can contact me on the phone Tel 01423 564544 |
