Harrogate International Festivals is proud to present Artist in Residence Saleem Ashkar as part of the 50th Harrogate Festival.
The 2015 Harrogate Festival is proud to present the Palestinian-Israeli pianist Saleem Ashkar as its Artist in Residence. Protégé of Daniel Barenboim, Ashkar performs a special programme exploring national identity in music that crosses cultural boundaries.
Ashkar started to learn the piano at the age of 6 and found composers such as Chopin to be strange and unfamiliar, however, it was that same cultural difference he found fascinating. Ashkar discovered that music could enable a search for local identity and form a Sense of Place and a sense of self.
In this programme Ashkar explores how composers throughout history have used folklore as a way of finding social and national identity. Join our artist in residence in a pre-concert talk to hear his personal insight from his youth growing up in Nazareth.
Tickets: £18. Available online: http://harrogateinternationalfestivals.com/whats-on/ ; over the phone on 01423 562 303; or in person at the Harrogate International Festivals Box Office, 32 Cheltenham Parade, Harrogate, HG1 1DB
