Berwins SALON North is a revolutionary movement for the heart and mind. The SALON events consist of a night of the most stimulating ideas in art, science and psychology designed to change your life for the better.
The format consists of an evening of three speakers, each given 30 minutes to engage the audience with their subject, interspersed with intervals allowing time for a well-crafted gin and tonic. Expect the remarkable!
Retribution is the Final Salon in our Crime, Punishment and Retribution Berwins Salon North Series.
Can forgiveness ever be a form of retribution? Dr Scilla Elworthy developed effective dialogue between the nuclear weapon policy makers of China, Russia and the West, and was adviser to Archbishop Desmond Tutu, Richard Branson, and Peter Gabriel in setting up ‘The Elders’. She founded Peace Direct which was voted ‘Best New Charity’ in 2005, co-founded Rising Women Rising and has three time been nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize. THAT’S THREE TIMES. In addition, her TED talk on non violence has been seen by over a million people, and she joins Berwins Salon North to close the series with her take on how peace builders deal with retribution.
We’ll hear from criminal lawyer and crime writer Neil White. Neil fights crime in the courtrooms by day and pens award winning crime by night, and in doing so has become one of the most successful of the UK’s crime writers. Neil will be at Berwins Salon North to explain how the reality of his work informs his writing and to help us understand the consequences of pursuing vengeance both in law, and in fiction.
The singularity has been described as the planets most existential threat, with the thought experiment of Roko’s basilisk popularising the idea that AI of the future will take vengeance on those of us who stood in its path to power. Dr Robert E Smith, senior research fellow at UCL, and renowned world expert on artificial intelligence will take us through his own thought experiments and using up to the minute AI knowledge, he will explain what we really have to fear in terms of retribution from the intelligent machines of the future.
Tickets £18 – Unreserved.
