The former children’s laureate Michael Morpurgo has written over 130 books. One of our best-loved storytellers, War Horse was adapted to film by Spielberg and stage by the National Theatre.
War is a recurring theme in his books such as Private Peaceful, and his most recent novel Listen to the Moon, which centres on a survivor of the sinking of the passenger liner the Lusitania in 1915.
War Horse has been hailed as the greatest anthem for peace.
Morpurgo was awarded an OBE for his writing, which inspires children all over the world. His ‘love for the music of words’ was instilled by his own mother, who read books and poems to him as a child. He warns that we lose the eye-wideness of childhood at our peril. “When you write for children you write for open hearts and open minds.”
History is his inspiration – the combination of truth and the magic of storytelling, “speak to us personally and perhaps even have the power to change us as people.”
Prepare to be inspired.
