Gerald Finzi was an influential and well regarded British composer who lived in Harrogate from the age of 7. Here, he studied composition with another celebrated British composer – Ernest Farrar. In this illustrated lecture, Ben Crick, conductor of the Harrogate Festival Orchestra, will chart a path that shows how these two men played a significant part in transforming British music – particularly British Song- into a genre with the depth, integrity and sophistication to compare favourably with that long established heavyweight of the song world, the German Lied.
