Third Friday Folk

(3rd Friday of every month at 8:30 p.m.)

We gather on the 3rd Friday of every month at Mother Shiptons Inn in Knaresborough where we have a welcoming landlord. We have the use of either the family room or the dining room, both of which are separate from the bar. This club grew from the ashes of the Friday 13th Club, as we (Edna Barker, Richard Sykes and Roy Hardacre) felt that we had to keep music alive in the area. Originally we met in the old club room in the Empress in Harrogate but moved in December 2006 to our present venue.

Admission is free to all. Performers - singers, musicians, poets - and audience welcome.

We have had some great evenings with a good mixture of talents so do come and join in.

Sadly Richard Sykes, the driving force in searching out a club venue to keep the club going, has died. The following obituary by Sue and Dave Swales appears courtesy of Tykes News:

Richard Sykes 7th April 1955 - 28th June 2007

Richard was a kind and gentle man; interesting, supportive and caring. He came to folk from a background of singing in musicals, at his church and entertaining at retirement homes.
Many of us first met him at Ripon Folk Club about five years ago. He was a very good singer and guitarist and song writer too, giving us and many others great pleasure through his performance of good songs, his main influence being Ralph McTell and James Taylor, and also his oh so funny monologues.
We always looked forward to being with Richard and sharing his music and we were pleased he enjoyed and supported us at Kirkby Folk. He was also one of the team who took over the running of Harrogate Folk Club about eighteen months ago and helped to find its new home in Knaresborough.
Unfortunately Richard fought a long battle with depression. It is so sad that Richard could not see how much he had; his family, the pleasure and joy he gave to others and the love of his partner, Rosalynd.
We are glad that we knew Richard as musician and friend. He will not be forgotten and will be missed by many.
