Devilish Publishing Music Publishers present the 2007 Devilish Award for Composition giving talented composers a chance to make their mark in the Brass Band industry. The theme of the 2007 award is to compose an original major work for Brass Band.

Swiss Brass Band Association Composers Competition

The Swiss Brass Band Association announces a composing competition to promote the creation of serious concert music for brass bands. The winning compositions can be used as test pieces for the Swiss National Brass Band Contest.

Shrewsbury Concert Band Composition Competition 2007

Shrewsbury Concert Band is holding a composition competition in 2006. Inspired by Charles Darwin and to be played at the Shrewssbury Darwin Festival in February 2007 the winning piece should be of no longer than 10 minutes.

Composers are invited to submit an original composition inspired by the early life and works of Charles Darwin.
  • The composition will be for full Concert Band
  • Entries may be in any score format and should be accompanied by a recording or midi file.
  • The composition with be of no more than 10 minutes duration and will be suitable for a community concert band of grade 5 – 8 players.
  • The winning composition will be premiered by Shrewsbury Concert Band during the Darwin Festival in February 2007. The composer will be invited to attend the premier performance.
  • All entrants will be notified of the results by 1st February 2007
  • The closing date for entries will be 30th September 2006.
  • Entries will be accepted on CD or manuscript in which case 2 copies of the entry should be sent with the application form to Judith Clarkson, 46 Washford Road, Meole Brace, Shrewsbury SY3 9HP.
  • The manuscripts should not bear the name of the composer. A number will be allocated to each entrant.
  • The competition will be judged by a panel of independent adjudicators and band members and the winning composition will be awarded a prize of £1000
  • A commemorative award will be made for 2nd and 3rd places
  • The organisers reserve the right not to make any awards and will not be obliged to enter into any correspondence with the competitors
  • The competition is open to all composers regardless of age or nationality.
  • An application fee of £10 is required for all entries to cover administration expenses.
  • Copyright will remain with the composer.
  • The entry implies permission for the band to perform and record the award winning pieces.

4th International Competition for Composition for Bands "Romualdo Marenco"

The object of the Competition is the composition of an original work for Concert Band Music for the duration of no less than 10 (ten) minutes and however not more than 20 (twenty) minutes, unpublished and never played in a public concert, either broadcasted by radio or television, or won prizes in other Competitions.

Swiss Brass Band Association Competition for new serious concert music

The competition is open to any composer under the age of 35 on the 15th December 2006 (the deadline for submissions).

The objective of the SBBA competition is that the prize-winning works can be used as test pieces for the Swiss Brass Band Championships. The submitted compositions must be original and must not have been previously published or performed. They must be sent in anonymously and be composed exactly for the orchestration of a brass band. There are no restrictions as to the stylistic orientation of the works. The jury will announce the names of the prizewinners in March 2007.

Prizes are as follows: 1st prize: CHF 5000, 2nd prize: CHF 2000, 3rd prize CHF 1000.

2nd Biennial Coups de Vents composition competition

The 2nd Biennial Coups de Vents composition competition will take place in 2006 in France. Coups de Vents is a composition competition for symphonic band, whose purpose is to enrich the original repertoire for symphonic bands. The first edition, held in 2004, was based upon traditional and folkloric music. It was a fantastic success, with 202 composers from 41 nationalities entering the competition. Philippe Langlet, director of the School of Music and the Symphonic Band of Dunkerque, President of WASBE France and the founder of the Coups de Vents competition, is its Artistic Director and has invited Maurice André, world-famous trumpet artist, to be its Honorary President. The competition is open to every music aesthetic and every nationality. The jury for the eliminatories in July 2006 will be composed of world-famous conductors and composers. Works that reach the quarterfinals and the semi-finals (November 2006) will be played in public in front of the jury in different cities of the Nord Pas-de-Calais Region in the north of France. The final will take place in December 2006. First prize is 10 000 euro; second prize is 5 000 euro and third prize is 1 500 euro.
The deadline for scores is 01 June, 2006. Entry forms must precede the scores and be postmarked by Monday, April 3, 2006.

Brighouse & Rastrick Band 125th Anniversary Composers' Competition

To celebrate Brighouse & Rastrick Band's 125th year, composers are invited to submit a three to four minute long concert opener piece. The winning composer will have their work premièred at the Celebration Concert in Huddersfield Town Hall on March 25th 2006, and have the work published by Kirklees Music. The piece of music will be exclusively performed by Brighouse & Rastrick Band until December 2006.

The deadline for entries (scores and parts) is noon on 31 December 2005.

3rd International Competition for Band Composition "Romualdo Marenco"

The City Council of Novi Ligure holds the 3rd International Competition for Band Composition "Romualdo Marenco" in honour of the great Musician from Novi who lived between 19th and 20th century and who had his artistic origins within the Wind Band.
Romualdo Marenco with his Gran Ballo "Excelsior" was a witness of the cultural and scientific progress and he lives on nowadays through this Competition addressed to anyone who desire to give some notes to the development of Wind Bands' repertoire. Wind Band is increasing its spread in Europe and all around the Word, adding perfectly the education of young musicians (Civic Wind Bands, scholar formations), to highest performing quality (Military Wind Bands and professional formations). Competition's aim, achieved with success the 3rd edition, is to promote the composition of music for Symphonic Wind Orchestra and to increase the contemporary repertoire with a personal language always more refined and wide.
In the first two editions the Organization made use of the collaboration of great international musicians in the field of Symphonic Band, about this kind of events: Jan Van der Roost, Philip Sparke, Bernardo Adam Ferrero, David MacBride, Giancarlo Aleppo and Leonardo Laserra Ingrosso. Artistic Director will be for the third time M° Maurizio Billi, well known not only as Wind Band Director's of the Italian Police, but also for his activity as composer in different fields and in the research about the original repertoire for band. To the International Competition for Band Composition "Romualdo Marenco" has recently been conferred the title of the High Patronage of the President of the Italian Republic.

North Eastern Composition Competition

Run by the Northern Regional Brass Band Trust, the competition is open to anyone resident in the North of England Region who has not had a work published by a recognised publishing house. Works submitted must be no longer than five minutes duration, preferably with a Northern theme. Entry Forms by January 31st 2005, Scores by 31st March 2005. It is hoped to have a special Gala Concert in Summer 2005 in which the first three places will be awarded. Prizes totalling £500 are on offer together with a possible publishing contract and a trophy to the winner, kindly donated by Kirklees Music. Any entrant may submit two works. New Music Award

The New Music Award from the PRS Foundation is offering £50,000 to inspire and stimulate the creation of an imaginative and original piece of new British music. Allowing total creative freedom, the Award is open to absolutely anyone, working in any genre and artistic context, individually or as a group. Composers Competition

SWBBA 60th Anniversary Composers Competition - open to any resident of Great Britain, of any age, who has not had an original composition published commercially. Entrants to submit a 10/12 minute test piece for 4th Section Bands, in no more than four movements and include a maximum of two percussionists. The title must reflect either the South West or the Association's Diamond anniversary. Registration to enter to be completed by 31 December 2004, and the finished works to be sent by 30 June 2005.
