Brimham Rocks

BRIMHAM ROCKS is an amazing collection of eroded landforms extending over an area of about 50 acres and is in the care of the National Trust.  Similar formations have been found at a few other places but none of which compare to the scale and magnificence of Brimham Rocks.

The rocks are made of Millstone Grit laid down in layers of different ages by rivers of the Carboniferous Period. Some geologists believe that sand-laden winds blown in arctic conditions eroded the rocks. Others believe that some form of chemical decomposition could have occurred during a tropical period before the Ice Ages.

Some of the formations have been given names such as the Idol, the Boat, the Dancing Bear, the Turtle, the Smartie Tube. The National Trust looks after footpaths and provides toilets and a shop. Brimham Rocks provides an ideal place to picnic and wander about.
