Stump Cross Caverns

STUMP CROSS CAVERNS is situated on the road from Pateley Bridge to Grassington and were discovered by miners in 1858. The Caverns were hollowed out of the limestone by water which found its way lower into the rock, leaving the upper part dry.

An interesting display of bones of animals from the Ice Ages show that bison, wolf and reindeer used the cave long ago.

The caves are famous for their stalactites and rimstone pools. Water which has passed through limestone contains carbonate of lime, and where the air is perfectly still, the drops which fall from the roof always land in the same place and a pillar of calcite rises vertically until it joins with the stalactite above, over thousands of years.

Minerals in the rocks often colour the calcite, and with the use of electric lighting the formations are beautifully enhanced.
