Pateley Bridge & Nidderdale herald  Birstwith Village Voices Column by Georgina Pearson

Please support David

David has run many marathons and half marathons, for several charities, for many years. This year he is taking part in the Great North Run on 30th September. David's chosen charity is the Multiple Scelorsis Trust and he will be running in aid of this worthy organisation. The MS Trust is a national charity working with and for the 85,000 people with MS in the UK, providing information, funding research and training health professionals. Most people with MS experience the first symptoms in their mid-20s, making the biggest cause of disability in young adults. David is jogging around the village collecting sponsorship (and also getting a bit of extra training in). If you are not at home when he calls, please post your donation, big or small, through his door at Wayside, Wreaks Road, Birstwith (opposite Birstwith School). If you Gift Aid your donation, it will be worth an incredible 28% more! Thank you for your support in anticipation.

Birstwith Show

Thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you!! First of all, thank you to the 'heavens' for providing such beautiful weather for Show Day on Saturday 28th July. Secondly, thank you to everyone who volunteered to help plan, organise, set up, 'man' and tidy away the show. Thirdly, thank you to everyone who entered a class in the show. There was a good number of entries this year. We have some very tallented artists, photograpers, flower arrangers and vegetable growers in Birstwith and the local area! Finally, thank you to everyone who 'showed' up to support the BHS Annual Show. Without your support the show would not have been so successful. I am sure that everyone who attending the show this year will agree with me in saying that there was a lively atmosphere all afternoon. Everyone was busy with something, whether they were enjoying a cup of tea and cake in the tea tent, trying their luck on the tombola, or daring to ride the bucking bronco! I know that visitors to the show were impressed with the variety of stands, games and activities, suitable for all ages. The look of anticipation and excitement on the many exhibitors faces just before the marquee opened after judging had taken place brought back fond memories of when I was younger and used to enter every class possible! Unfortunately I did not have time to prepare anything for this year's show but have been encouraged by the experience of the show this year to enter something/s next year! I would like to send a message to all Birstwith School pupils. Your exhibits were fantastic! I especially admired your paintings of the church. You must have worked very hard and I am sure your friends, families and teachers are very proud of you! The evening event was just as enjoyable as the day's activities. There was a good turn out to enjoy the music from the Pugwash Band. Many peole devoured a Hog Roast sandwich for supper and the tombola was managed by Stephanie, an eleven year old girl, all evening! Everyone was in high spirits. I personally enjoyed dancing the night away with my friends! There was a real sense of community throughout the whole day and I just hope that next year will be as successful as this year has been.

A plea from the BHS!

The Birstwith Horticultural Society need you! Each year, the BHS puts on the 'Birstwith Show'. This event could not take place without the hard work and dedication of the committee members and the many other supporters who all rovide their services voluntarily. If you are interested in helping with Car Parking, Traffic Control, setting up the Show Ground, moving tables/chairs or laying out tables for exhibits etc.. for 2008, please get in touch with the BHS. In addition, if you have any interest in joining the BHS Committee and are able to contribute your time toward the organisation and administration of the event, please get in touch. The current committee is a fantastic group of people who each contribute their time to organising particular aspects of the show. In order to continue putting on the show the BHS needs more members. So, if you are interested, please let them know! You can give me a call and I can can give you the telephone numbers of the people you will need to speak to.
